Making Adidas sneakers by 3D printing technology

Germany has maintained its position as a global manufacturing base through innovative engineering technology, and it is not uncommon to use robots in factories and as well as the "3D printing" technology. But the state of Bavaria aines (Ansbach) the town of Bach, a new factory is still out of the ordinary, it will not produce automobiles, aircraft or electronic products, but it will produce a variety of sports shoes. Sports shoes industry has an annual output value of US $80 billion, which is mainly produced in China, Indonesia and vietnam.


"Fast factory" by the German sporting goods giant Adidas and production Equipment Manufacturing Company Oechsler Motion together to build, is expected to be put into operation in 2017. The initial production will be slow, and then gradually increased to an annual output of 500 thousand pairs of sports shoes. For Adidas, which produces about 300 million pairs of sports shoes, the numbers are not the key. The task of the "fast factory" is to help them innovate their way of making shoes. The technology gained from the project can be extended to other new factories and existing factories, including factories in Asia, where the demand for sports and leisure apparel is rising with the growth of consumer wealth.


Sneakers are mostly hand-made in large factories in Asia, but as labor costs rise, the workforce is in short supply. But the creation of a "fast factory" is far more than that. It aims at a bigger pain point: customers want instant shoes, but the supply chain is hard to keep up with. Adidas technology innovation Director (Gerd Manz) - Gede Menzies as saying: "we may draw further apart business operations and the wishes of consumers." A new product from design to shelves could last up to 18 months, and most sneakers are now on sale for less than a year. The emergence of the "fast factory" is expected to shorten the time the design is completed to the shelves of the product to one week, or even one day.
